An international workshop entitled Planning In The Real World: Challenges Of Sustainable And Affordable Modernisation In The Solid Waste Sector was held 22-23 February, 2008 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

The workshop successfully reached its aim to trigger a discussion and introduce a new way of thinking about the role of the private recycling sector in waste management.  The discourse of waste management modernization never before included the informal sector activities in Romania and has been scarcely discussed in the region.  The workshop was a unique opportunity for representatives of environmental authorities, municipalities, county councils, operators, consultants, recycling companies from all over the country to learn about the world wide realitiy of informal sector activities in waste management.  The workshop brought together international experts from Egypt, Peru, The Netherlands, Germany and from the South East European region such as Serbia, Albania, Bulgaria and Bosnia Herzegovina to share their experiences first hand.  The proceedings of the workshop and the conclusions of the workgroups and the debate will be compiled in a publication and will be downloadable on this site in April.

The Workshop was organized by CWG members WASTE, The Netherlands and Green Partners, Romania, together with Brantner Servicii Ecologice SA and the Resource Center for Roma, Romania.

Financial and organizational support was provided by the CWG, MATRA KAP, Netherlands Embassy to Romania, IFC Recycling Linkages, the World Bank and Brantner Servicii Ecologice SA, Romania.
